Marwan Jumean, MD, Ismael Salas de Armas, MD, and Bindu Akkanti, MD, discuss the sixth annual Houston SHOCK Symposium, a free, educational event and one of the largest shock conferences in the United States. Drs. Jumean, Salas, and Akkanti, all from UTHealth in Houston, Texas, discuss how the symposium came to be an important forum for exchanging shock management insights among a multidisciplinary array of clinicians, especially given the lack of clear evidence and guidance for managing shock patients. They discuss the importance of the heart team in caring for patients with shock and lift up the unsung heroes who help identify shock early and triage patients appropriately. They also discuss the importance of open lines of communication between shock centers, like UTHealth, and community physicians and referral hospitals.
