Mani Daneshmand, MD, and Casey Miller, APN, from Emory Healthcare, use a case-based approach to discuss the management of severe cardiogenic shock with mechanical circulatory support (MCS). In each case, MCS enables the patient’s heart to rest and recover.

During the discussion of case one, Dr. Daneshmand highlights the escalation from Impella CP® with SmartAssist® to Impella 5.5® with SmartAssist® and discusses the insertion of Impella RP® with SmartAssist®.

Case two highlights escalation from IABP and VA ECMO to Impella CP and then Impella 5.5 in a young patient with myocarditis. Case three is a surgical case involving CABG and direct insertion of Impella 5.5.

Dr. Daneshmand and Casey Miller discuss left ventricular unloading strategies, transitioning patients between MCS strategies, weaning and the role of Emory as a hub for managing these patients.
