Ioana Dumitru, MD, FACC, presents a patient case with Bipella support for dilated cardiomyopathy with goal to recovery. The patient is a 37-year-old male with nonischemic cardiomyopathy and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 10%. The patient has a history of alcohol use, diabetes and pulmonary embolism, as well as a history of heart failure hospitalization and biventricular failure. On Day two, the shock team decides to initiate Bipella support with Impella RP Flex™ with SmartAssist® and Impella CP®. Impella CP is later escalated to Impella 5.5® with SmartAssist®. The patient is eventually weaned from support and discharged, returns to work and remains stable on guideline-directed medical therapy. Dr. Dumitru is medical director of the MCS program at Tampa General Hospital.
